So I started reading the book a few months ago but I got bored and put it back on my bookshelf. It's based on a true story but I've read quite a few Chinese memoirs from the Cultural Revolution. Then I found out they made a movie out of the book which was perfect because it meant I didn't have to actually finish the book.
Despite the occasional over-acting and dramatization, I loved, loved, loved the movie! I cried buckets when Li, having defected from China and banned to return, had his parents specially flown in by the US government to watch him perform on stage, after not having seen their son for many years. While I don't expect to meet with the kind of success he did, I guess I saw myself in him- striking it out alone in a foreign land, wanting to make your parents proud.
I am going to go back to the book and finish it now. :)
